ROBOT LOVE, A Performative Symposium

As a part of the opening ceremony of the ROBOT LOVE exhibition, and coinciding with the book launch, Martijntje Smits introduces the question ‘can we learn from robots about love?’ with a performative ROBOT LOVE symposium. The dialogue is loosely based on her contribution for the book under the same name, referring to Plato’s Symposion on Love, in which five thinkers with distinguished positions have an indebt dialogue on the theme.

The performance will be an improvisation loosely based on the written text – it is especially important that the ‘actors’ are able to develop a consistent position and bring it into play with the other four positions. For the engineer, the problem is clear, and so is the solution. The ethicist has serious doubts: what does Robot Love imply for mankind? The love philosopher tries to keep hold of the essence of love, while the STSer claims that new technologies open up new practices and meanings of love. The experience expert shows that new technologies have emancipatory potential: they can help us with love mapping/ learning how to love.
